About Sylvia Gonzalez
My first memory was sitting at the kitchen table drawing when I was 2 yrs old. Drawing has stuck with me and remains a natural and consistent part of my life.
After receiving a BFA from Ball State University specialized in drawing in 1984, I moved on to waiting tables and picture framing, from Cleveland OH, and Miami FL, to San Francisco. I also worked on different aspects of my art through this time. From black and white, and hand-colored photography, figure drawing, to monotype printmaking, exploration of techniques has kept art-making a never ending learning experience.
Traveling has been an important part of my life and art. After college I spent time traveling throughout Europe. In 1988 I moved from Coconut Grove, Florida to San Francisco. Between 1991 and 1998 I visited Costa Rica, Canada, Cuba and spent 6 months exploring Southeast Asia, on my own. The light, color, smells and sounds of the tropics in all its glory, has greatly influenced my work.
In 2001 I had my daughter Lucia, and she has more than anything else in my life, strengthened my commitment to to my work as an artist.
